FERPA, informed

When I worked in public education, I served as part of our districts' FERPA enforcement teams. Because much of my work focused on promoting district and student news, I had to be very conscious about using student images and names in my publicity efforts.

At the beginning of each year, parents had to opt out of having their children's names or images published anywhere if they so desired. And, I'm here to assure you, we all took those "opt-outs" very seriously! In fact, I kept a list of all opt-outs in a secure document on my smart phone so I could reference them at a moment's notice.
